Project Story

Restoring a Boston Landmark with Imported Unfading Black Slate

Our Lady of Good Voyage Chapel — a beloved historic landmark in downtown Boston — required a complete slate roof restoration that would honor the building's architectural heritage while delivering modern performance. Marshall Roofing, experienced QWIK Slate® contractors, specified Newmont's Imported Unfading Black Select slate for this prestigious project.

The slate — sourced from Newmont's partner be natural in Galicia, Spain — is graded to ASTM C406 S-1, the highest quality designation. Spanish imported unfading black is the ideal choice for historic religious buildings requiring a consistent, non-weathering dark slate that will maintain its appearance for generations.

QWIK Slate® hook-fixing was chosen over traditional nailing for its speed, safety, and superior attachment. The system allows individual slates to be replaced without disturbing surrounding slates — a critical advantage for a historic building that will require periodic maintenance over its 100+ year service life.

The completed restoration preserves the chapel's historic character while providing a roof system engineered for the 21st century. Our Lady of Good Voyage Chapel joins Blair House and Hamilton Smith Hall as one of Newmont's most significant institutional projects.
